The magnitude of length in Peg + Cat animated series

Abstract

In recent years, cartoon series with mathematical content have appeared for children in entertainment media. They have specialized advisers, and this certain didactic intentionality is not an obstacle for this mathematics to appear naturally intertwined in the narrative. In this article we present an analysis of the first two seasons of one of these series, Peg + Cat, aimed at boys and girls 4-7 years old. We focus on analysing the treatment of the length magnitude. To do this, we will use theoretical tools from the onto-semiotic approach to mathematical knowledge and instruction; in particular, its ontology of primary objects. In this way, in the first place, the types of problem situations around length are identified. Subsequently, a more detailed analysis is carried out to reel off which are the primary objects that emerge from the systems of practices that are articulated around these situations. Our results show that in 11 of the 60 episodes there are situations around the length magnitude. These situations are usually of comparison without intermediate objects or of measurement with object units (anthropometric or arbitrary). Unsurprisingly, given the age of the target audience, there are hardly any situations with standard units. On the other hand, a large part of the mathematical objects appears ostensibly, reinforcing the fundamental concepts, a fact that may be due to their educational intentionality. Among the conclusions we highlight the didactic possibility of this resource, which can serve as a link between formal and informal education, as well as establish bridges between the infant and primary stages.
